Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Pūkenga/Pūkenga Matua - Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Artificial Intelligence to join Te Kura Mātai Pūkaha, Pūrorohiko - School of Engineering and Computer Science on a full-time, permanent basis.

The position represents a chance to provide leadership, research, and teaching support in Engineering and Computer Science, particularly within the Artificial Intelligence (AI) programme. The appointee will work with existing staff in the AI programme and across the School to continue the development of the programme and its integration with other programmes as well as increase our impact via research and broader engagement with external stakeholders. Te Kura Mātai Pūkaha, Pūrorohiko - School of Engineering and Computer Science is looking to appoint at either Pūkenga - Lecturer or Pūkenga Matua - Senior Lecturer level (equivalent to Assistant Professor in the US). This will be dependent on the experience and qualifications of the candidate.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide high quality and critically reflective teaching practices.
  • Contribute to innovations in learning, teaching, and assessment within the discipline, including demonstrating digital fluency.
  • Contribute to the review and re-design of AI programmes and courses.
  • Engage in regular professional development that leads to enhanced teaching practice and where relevant, inclusion of practitioner perspectives.
  • Engage effectively with industry, government, academics, professions, and diverse communities.
  • Contribute to the collegial development of the Programme, Academic Unit and Faculty through respectful and transparent interactions with colleagues.
  • Undertake job evaluations in accordance with the University’s remuneration framework and job evaluation.

You will:

  • Be a motivated, student-focused individual who listens to and understands the needs of students and meets those through a professional, courteous, and empathetic approach.
  • Hold a high level of integrity at both a personal and academic level and commit to maintaining high professional and academic standards.
  • Have strong communication skills both orally and written in a variety of ways to suit the situation and needs of the recipients.

  • Be willing to build and maintain positive and beneficial internal and external relationships.

Key requirements:

  • A completed PhD in a relevant field, or other relevant qualifications commensurate with the role.
  • Demonstrated evidence of a disciplinary background in AI with the ability to teach across other disciplines including but not limited to computer science, programme languages and software engineering.
  • Record of research in AI, preferably in computer vision, deep learning, natural language processing, reinforcement learning and others.
  • Demonstrated evidence of developing skill with a range of pedagogies and technologies.
  • Proven good oral and written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with students and staff from a diverse range of backgrounds.

All areas of AI are of interest, but applications are particularly welcome from candidates with interests in symbolic regression and statistical/mathematical modelling, deep learning and transfer learning, scheduling and combinational optimisation, evolutionary and multi-objective learning, neural networks, computer vision and image analysis, and natural language processing as well as interpretable/explainable AI and machine learning.
